Kangaroo export industry under threat: MP

Kangaroo export industry under threat: MP

13 Jan, 2010 03:00 AM
A campaign to have the European Union ban imports of kangaroo products has the potential to “decimate” the $270 million a year industry in Australia, Member for Parkes, Mark Coulton says.

The Australian Wildlife Protection Council is behind the campaign and according to

the animal welfare group it is enlisting the support of celebrities such as Dame Judy Dench.

California briefly banned the importation of Kangaroo derived products in 2007, however the ban was overturned in the following year.

“The groups behind these campaigns are very selective with their facts and conveniently ignore the problems being caused to Australia’s fragile ecosystem by the abundance of kangaroos in this country,” Mr Coulton said.

“It is very misguided, and with the nation’s kangaroo export industry worth hundreds of

millions of dollars a year,

it is also potentially very damaging.”

Mr Coulton said a ban could potentially see a further explosion in kangaroo numbers and increase the risk of erosion of the nation’s most vulnerable ecosystems.

According to the RSPCA

“questions remain about the humaneness of kangaroo shooting and the basis for current government policies on the management and killing of kangaroos.”

The NSW kangaroo population in 2008 was estimated to be just over seven million.

Each year the NSW Government sets a quota for the amount of kangaroos, which can be “harvested” for commercial

purposes, such as pet food.

Last year the NSW quota was just over one million, however the actual take was below this because of the downturn in the industry.

The Department of Environment, Climate Change and Water is responsible for handing out licences to commercial operators and said the process was humane.

Kangaroos are a plague. There are too many of them. If the Europeans are silly enough to eat them, let them. RSPCA and other wildlife protection groups are zealots. Their claims are not to be believed. Roo shooting, in fact all hunting, is a strong part of the male psyche and should be encouraged. It may just cut down the anger, violence and crime that seems to pervade young males these days.

If this gentleman advocated the bashing of kittens his political career would probaby be at an end so why is it okay to kill joeys by bashing their heads in against the side of a ute. Some Australians have a very arrogant, ignorant and hypocritical attitude to animals.

Political Hypocrisy - It's quick and painless, where is the cruelty?

Political Hypocrisy - would you prefer that kangaroo population (which has ballooned since European settlement) destroys our fragile ecosystems and puts many other native species at risk? I don't understand your logic - you want to save an out of control pest and in doing so destroy many endangered native species?

Skippy, Skippy, Skippy the dead Kangaroo. Stuff the Greenies and there Latte drinking counterparts. Australians should embrace the Roo as our National Dish, full of Protein a leaner meat and a lot healthier for all. Instead of the Angus Burger we should have a Roo Burger. And embrace our indigenous heritage as Australians. Throw the Lamb off the Barbie this Australia Day and sink your teeth into a roo should be our new motto.

Political Hypocrisy, when did kittens come into this? It is good to see Mark Coulton actually speaking up on issues that affect his electorate. And I doubt very much the figure of 7 million kangaroos in NSW. There are over 40 million roos in Australia, the majority in Queensland and NSW. Professional roo shooters dispatch joeys with the heal of their boot onto their heads. This is the way they are instructed to do it as it causes instant death. About as humane as it gets.

John Q, I don't even know how to respond to your statement I am so shocked. Are you serious? You really believe that allowing roo shooting decreases violence and crime? You sound like you're trying to justify your own need for violence, if you have anger issues in your "male psyche", I don't think roo shooting will help you, you need to seek professional help. In regards to Political Hypocrisy, I somewhat agree. I've heard many stories of outrageous cruelty to Kangaroos by people out hunting, so maybe if there was someway that it could be guaranteed that the Kangaroos were being killed humanely. I'm all for Kangaroos being hunted, my cat loves Kangaroo meat, however, I do understand why some people would be concerned about the way the kangaroos are being killed. Also, their population has definately ballooned, but it is also important to remember that these are native species as well. They aren't some pest that was introduced, so I don't believe that is an appropriate name. They are purely out of control and decreasing the exportation of Kangaroo meat will definately worsen this problem.

Political Hypocrisy- Question, were doe this gentleman advocate the bashing in of the heads of joey's ? I have read the article a couple of time and I have failed to any reference to this bashing. Kangaroos have the ability to breed very quickly in good seasons and with the advent of dams and bore drains for stck feed, this has only elevated the Kangaroo problem in this country. If we encouraged more people to eat the meat from these animals and then have a better control over their proliferation it would be better for the animals and our land. What is the diference in killing or slaughtering domesticated stock for a food souce then Kangaroos or even emus for that fact. Why should some do gooders from over seas and even here in Australia tell us what is good for our land and animals. Make the kangaroos and emus a valuable stock and you will ensure its survival. Do you see cattle and sheep look like dying out?

Kangaroo population in Australia is approx. 50 million.

Our human population is 20 million. I think shooting a few roos ain't going to hurt the Kangaroo species. Not only that, Kangaroos are a pest and a plague not only to our crops but to our roads as well.

Exporting Kangaroo meat will not hurt the Kangaroo population, as they breed worse then mice.

Above all, I am still yet to see the good side of an oversized rat!

Yes, Miss K, I am serious. A male that is out shooting is not in town committing crime. I am also old enough to remember Australia before gun laws. I remember when most boys had good adult male role models. They would take their sons, etc out shooting. These male role models taught respect for guns and to finish off animals humanely. These kids did not grow up to bash their wives, use guns in anger or crime, get into gang fights, all the things wrong with society today. Nor were they constantly angry; they didn't swear at everyone in anger. The attempted feminisation of boys, plus the removal or desertion of many fathers, are major contributions to the anger in adolescent males that we see today. They have lost the respect that leads to the unwarranted cruelty you heard about. You do not know me, nor do you seem to understand males, so I will decline your offer of professional help. I am not a violent person. I have not been shooting for many years. I do not own a gun. My cats also love their roo meat. I get it from the supermarket. Just as I could not "masculanise" you, you cannot feminise males. I hope, but doubt, you will understand. It is a male thing.
