Jail for break and enter

10 Feb, 2012 03:00 AM
A MAN with a history of drug dependency has been jailed for resisting police and breaking, entering and stealing. Allan Wayne Edwards, 21, of Bourke, was arrested after houses in Fitzroy Street were entered late at night on September 24 last year.

Edwards pleaded guilty to three charges when he was brought before Magistrate Andrew Eckhold in Dubbo Local Court this week.

The court heard Edwards had been in custody since his arrest and wanted to involve himself in drug rehabilitation in an attempt to identify the cause of offending behaviour. “At age 21 he still has his life ahead of him,’’ the Aboriginal Legal Service said.

“The stolen goods (a laptop computer, charger and Nintendo DS) were recovered and there was no real injury to police.’’

The Department of Public Prosecutions said Edwards had been given the benefit of bonds and suspended jail sentences in the past. “The offences warrant more time in custody,’’ the DPP said.

Magistrate Eckhold said he had sympathy for Edwards’s background and drug dependency.

“But I have to stop you and others from committing offences,’’ he said.
