Inquest into man’s disappearance - Family makes police phone tapping claims

06 Mar, 2008 07:11 AM
The daughter of Gordon Tremain, who reported a man missing from his property eight years ago, yesterday told an inquest she knew her family was “being listened to” by police after the disappearance.

Dubbo Coroner’s Court heard snippets of telephone conversations between Marlene Tremain and other family members after Maxwell George went missing, including “we’ve got to be vigilant” and, “I’m not going to say anything now”.

Yesterday, when questioned over why she made such statements, Ms Tremain said she was “aware that things we say are being listened to”, and did not want her conversations to be misconstrued.

Ms Tremain said she had “no knowledge” of the details surrounding Mr George’s disappearance from her father’s property, near Brewarrina, in March 2000.

Police interviewed various members of the Tremain family following the disappearance of Mr George, who was last seen at Mr Tremain’s property near Brewarrina.

Ms Tremain said she “was aware there was some suspicion” of her family after she was interviewed by police.

The inquest heard that Mr Tremain had passed his daughter a short note advising her to be careful about what she told police.

Deputy State Coroner Paul MacMahon asked her if she thought the note was “strange”.

She said yes, but it wasn’t unlike her father to leave notes to give her “practical advice”.

Ms Tremain said she did not ask him why he left her the note.

She also denied having any knowledge of an arrangement for a union between herself and Mr George, the inquest heard, saying she had limited contact with him.

She said Mr George had made her feel “uncomfortable” on at least one occasion while he was living on her parent’s property, located on the outskirts of Dubbo.

The inquest also heard that the property from which Mr George went missing, ‘Salvation’, had experienced heavy rain at the time of his disappearance.

The owner of a neighbouring property also took the stand yesterday, saying the dirt roads would have been inaccessible to vehicles after the rain.

Mr George was 48 at the time he was reported missing.

The inquest continues today.
