“I’ll sit here for all of the next week to get what I want,” Rick Honeysett said as he protested outside Elders and Chimes Insurance in Brisbane Street, yesterday.
Mr Honeysett was staging a one-man protest over what he says is a lack of action from the insurer on a claim he made in December.
Elders Insurance declined to comment on the matter yesterday.
Mr Honeysett said the claim involved damage to a mini excavator, which he used for his plumbing business.
After he found it too expensive to repair he decided to claim it on his insurance.
Mr Honeysett said he was still waiting for the payout from this claim and had been told he would have it on January 29.
He said he was then told the payment couldn’t be made because he had no proof of ownership, something he disputes.
“They told me on the 29th of last month they were going to transfer the money from Adelaide,” he said.
“Then they told me there was no proof of ownership, but me and my son came down here and signed all the papers,” he said.
Mr Honeysett said the lack of resolution and the need for him to call the Elders Insurance head office in Adelaide were costing him money.
“It has probably cost me $150 in phone calls to Adelaide and I still could not get any result,” he said.
Mr Honeysett has insured his plumbing business with Elders for the past 15 years and said he had not had any problem with them before.
“I run the business with my wife and I’ve never made a claim in 15 years,” he said.
He said the police had come early yesterday morning when he started his protest to make sure he did not pose a threat to the office. He told the police he had no intention of going inside the office or blocking others from entering.
“I told then I’m not going in, I’m just going to sit here,” he said.
Mr Honeysett said he had told Elders he would not go ahead with his protest if there were a resolution on his claim.
“I told them I’ll cancel it all if I get results, but nothing happened.”
An Elders Insurance spokesperson has said they have no comment to make on Mr Honeysett’s protest.
“It is not Elders Insurance policy to speak on specific circumstances,” he said.
