‘I’ll sit here all week’, irate customer promises Elders

10 Feb, 2010 03:00 AM
“I’ll sit here for all of the next week to get what I want,” Rick Honeysett said as he protested outside Elders and Chimes Insurance in Brisbane Street, yesterday.

Mr Honeysett was staging a one-man protest over what he says is a lack of action from the insurer on a claim he made in December.

Elders Insurance declined to comment on the matter yesterday.

Mr Honeysett said the claim involved damage to a mini excavator, which he used for his plumbing business.

After he found it too expensive to repair he decided to claim it on his insurance.

Mr Honeysett said he was still waiting for the payout from this claim and had been told he would have it on January 29.

He said he was then told the payment couldn’t be made because he had no proof of ownership, something he disputes.

“They told me on the 29th of last month they were going to transfer the money from Adelaide,” he said.

“Then they told me there was no proof of ownership, but me and my son came down here and signed all the papers,” he said.

Mr Honeysett said the lack of resolution and the need for him to call the Elders Insurance head office in Adelaide were costing him money.

“It has probably cost me $150 in phone calls to Adelaide and I still could not get any result,” he said.

Mr Honeysett has insured his plumbing business with Elders for the past 15 years and said he had not had any problem with them before.

“I run the business with my wife and I’ve never made a claim in 15 years,” he said.

He said the police had come early yesterday morning when he started his protest to make sure he did not pose a threat to the office. He told the police he had no intention of going inside the office or blocking others from entering.

“I told then I’m not going in, I’m just going to sit here,” he said.

Mr Honeysett said he had told Elders he would not go ahead with his protest if there were a resolution on his claim.

“I told them I’ll cancel it all if I get results, but nothing happened.”

An Elders Insurance spokesperson has said they have no comment to make on Mr Honeysett’s protest.

“It is not Elders Insurance policy to speak on specific circumstances,” he said.

Obviously no problems will occur if no claims are made, but the situation changes with insurance companies as soon as "claim" is mentioned. Elder is one of many insurance companies that don't like to settle just claims fairly and quickly. The solution we found was to go through a broker who represented you, not the insurance company.

Typical insurance company. Very good at taking premiums, not so good at paying up. Where is the government and consumer protection?

Stick to your guns Mr Honeysett, it not only Elders insurance that suck. Try and get a good deal for CTP greenslips from any insurer. Especially if ypou are under 25 or have under 25 driving your car.

No claims in 15 years suggests a genuine claim to me. A lesson for us all - they're happy to take your premiums just don't expect them to be there for you when you need them. We're with you Mr. Honeysett.

$150 in phone calls? Hasn't he heard of the various capping plans available to cap interstate phone calls?

I think it should be noted that this issue would stem from the Adelaide head office of Elders and not Johnathon O'Sullivan, principal of the local branch. He has been my insurer for years and I have never had a problem with him or Elders. He's a great bloke, a good businessman and a huge contributor to our local area so I hope his business doesn't suffer too much from this press coverage. Its a pity his side of story is hamstrung by Elders' policy of not commenting on specific circumstances. If there is a positive outcome then I hope the Liberal publishes it so as to rectify any damage to Johnno's reputation in our community.

Totally agree with you Smithy. Johnathon has been our insurer for years too and we have never had a problem with him or Elders. I know both Rick & Johnathon and they're both top fellas. If Rick is encountering problems in Adelaide, I am surprised that he would seek this sort of local publicity, knowing the damage he would cause to Johnathon's business. Why can't Rick just produce the paperwork evidencing ownership of the excavator and the problem would be solved?
