The backbone of Orana Heights Public School’s library finally has somewhere to store her lunch.
Harvey Norman have donated a fridge to Orana Heights’ library for a wheelchair-bound volunteer.
Fiona Woodward, who has been volunteering in Orana Heights’ library for 20 years, can’t get to the fridge in the staff room.
Fiona has suffered from Friedreich’s ataxia, a disease that attacks the nervous system, since birth and finds it difficult to walk without help.
She uses a wheelchair and can’t access some rooms in the school - including the staff room and that all-important fridge.
A small bar fridge in the library has helped out in the past, but it has been removed.
So the staff at Orana Heights started looking for another one.
Library co-ordinator Donna Thomas finally put thought into action and asked Dubbo’s Harvey Norman if they would donate a fridge just for Fiona.
Fiona said she’d be happily storing her lunch in the newly donated fridge.
It’s been a rough time for Fiona, who was diagnosed with cancer in February and had an operation the day after. But she was back in the library the day after that.
“Nothing keeps me down,” she said.
Ms Thomas said Fiona was the “backbone” of the library.
“She is the cheeriest and most knowledgeable person I know - the whole staff hold her in the deepest regard,” Ms Thomas said.
Ms Thomas thanked Harvey Norman for its help, particularly Ian Webb, Barry Smith and Adrian Eames.
“This has been an outstanding contribution on Harvey Norman’s behalf, they needed no convincing and were very encouraging,” she said.
“We’re quite happy to help out in the commnuity, especially with people who volunteer,” Barry said.
