Elderly travellers hit by heartless thieves

09 Mar, 2010 09:57 AM
The son of an elderly couple reliving an adventure from Hobart to Darwin, is appealing to the unknown person who allegedly stole their belongings as they stopped over in Dubbo, to have a heart and return the property.

Matt Lewis, the son of Ron and Pat Lewis, both in their 70s, contacted the Daily Liberal yesterday expressing concern for his parents who had stopped in Dubbo for a few nights. He said their mobile phones, credit cards, cash and other personal effects were stolen on Sunday night.

“I would appeal to the person or persons who committed this opportunistic theft to return the property to its rightful owners and be respectful of the debt you owe the elderly, as opposed to stealing from those who made this country so great,” Matt said.

Mr and Mrs Lewis said they had an address book stolen among the goods, with contacts from the past 20 years, and prescription medicine.

After the theft, the couple went to their bank, Westpac, yesterday and ordered new credit cards. They said the bank was very helpful and gave them money to last them until the mess was sorted out.

However Telstra did not show them the same understanding, Ms Lewis said. When they went to the company, the couple was told they could not get a new phone without any photo identification, even though all their licences had been stolen.

The 45 years Mr and Mrs Lewis had been with Telstra did not make a difference, they said. After arriving in Dubbo on Saturday afternoon, Mr and Mrs Lewis were supposed to be leaving early yesterday morning.

They already had to change their route to go to Broken Hill next because of the floods in Queensland, and now cannot leave Dubbo until Wednesday or Thursday when they receive their credit cards.

Back in 1968, at the age of 32, Mrs Lewis travelled with her three sons from Hobart to Darwin to meet Mr Lewis who had just joined the Northern Territory police force.

While Matt said his parents were “pretty resilient”, he said the events of Sunday night would have put a dampener on their trip.

Orana Local Area Command Inspector Richard Morley said police were continuing their investigation into the break and enter.

Mr and Mrs Lewis said they would still enjoy the rest of their trip and were looking forward to arriving in Darwin and seeing their granddaughter.

My heart goes out to these people, no one likes such injustices. But I can't see why a journo can only tell half the story, give me a crack at it. How did the incident occur, were they moteling, caravaning, back packing, living in their car. Surely the very resourceful son (who could find the phone number of the local paper) could have faxed a power bill or something satisfying to Telstra instead of rubbishing them. Life is not all about sensationalising misfortunes, particulalry a very generous city of Dubbo. May the low life who did this get their just return but also may the sensationalists of Dubbo get the same.

There is good reason why you will never be journalist, luv2bajourno.

You clearly don't understand that good journos don't hide from the truth no matter how uncomfortable it makes us feel. To do so would be unethical.

Nor do you seem to appreciate that there are both legal and ethical limitations on what good journos can report.

And finally you seem to struggle with logical argument. On the one hand you criticise a good journo for publiscising this crime; on the other you criticise the same good journo for not giving you enough information about the same crime.

Do try to make up your mind.

Sadly, Mr & Mrs Lewis have bcome just another statistic in the record of theft from visiting caravans and motor homes in Dubbo. Personally, my wife and I have been victims of such thieves, as has our daughter and her family. Not only have we suffered theft, but on our most recent visit last October we had two almost new tyres destroyed by vandals. Dubbo is by no means the only place suffering such problems however. Mindless acts and opportunistic theft is everywhere and until someone takes a stand and insists on change nothing will improve.

Hopefully the remainder of your stay in Dubbo will outshine this unforunate event. Can I just say to Aaron Lakin that your comments above were a little out of line, sure let this person know that what they said you dont agree with and point out points like you did, which I do agree with you, but the trash talk is not nessasary.....

Simply defending the work of a very good young journalist against poorly thought out and unwarranted sniping.

That said, I apologise if you feel I have done so with too much vigour.

We would like to know - how, when & where?

Trash talk gee? Hardly. What was posted made little sense and seemed to indicate a mind at opposition with itself. There could be a myriad of reasons why those items weren't included. I used to work in the media, and now work for the legal profession, and know well that often media outlets dont publicise all details to avoid copy-cats, sometimes at the request of the cops.

Thanks for that luv2bajourno - in fact adequate documentation including those from the bank were provided to Telstra, who maintained a "no photo ID, no telephone" attitude. As far as "sensationalising misfortunes" is concerned, I think you should just stop and think a moment at the impact that this can have on someone of that age, especially in the circumstances of how the burglary occured - which you are not going to be made privvy to. Thank You to the Daily Liberal for taking the time to publish this story in an effort to catch this crook and have my parents belongs returned.

Hi luv2bajourno: A bit difficult as you suggest - my brother lives in a mainland city while Mum & Dad are from Tassie. Anyway, thanks Daily Liberal for the story - maybe the person who took the stuff will drop it somewhere. It's certainly v. difficult to keep going for anyone, particularly if they're in the mid-70s.
