Respected Dubbo businessman Barry Brebner thinks the Dubbo economy could take off if the city had an international airport.
The 2009 Jean Emile Serisier Roll of Honour inductee would also like to see a tunnel under the Blue Mountains to open up Dubbo to the coast, and Dubbo businessman Michael Brennan is singing a similar tune.
That’s just what Dubbo Chamber of Commerce wants to hear in response to its call for 10 Big Ideas for Dubbo.
The chamber has started a campaign to accelerate the Dubbo economy and it wants all Dubbo residents and business people to match the effort of Mr Brebner and Mr Brennan.
The chamber’s campaign comes after its statewide counterpart conducted a similar program and as Dubbo City Council calls for tenders for a new economic development strategy.
Dubbo chamber president Warren Williams said the idea came from the chamber’s lobby committee, which recognised that economic development would be a hot topic for discussion in coming months.
“Chamber is keen to hear from local business people, as well as Dubbo residents, to appreciate what they think would make Dubbo a better place to live, work and visit,” Mr Williams said.
“We recognise that economic development is at the forefront of many people’s minds at the moment and chamber is keen to understand what people think could make a difference, particularly ideas that can help expand and grow our local business community.
“We are keen to see if people believe, as they did in the NSW Business Chamber’s campaign, that taxpayers wanted better value from money from the government, as well as changes to employment taxes and government red tape.”
NSW Business Chamber CEO Stephen Cartwright encouraged local communities like Dubbo to expand 10 Big Ideas to Grow NSW, which involved more than 500 business leaders, academics, community leaders and government representatives.
“I think this is a terrific initiative by Dubbo Chamber of Commerce to develop their own 10 Big Ideas to Grow Dubbo,” he said.
Mr Brennan added an 11th idea to his list - “relocate a north coast beach to the Macquarie River”.
The 10 Big Ideas for Dubbo campaign coincides with the chamber’s annual survey to determine how well it is representing members’ interests.
The survey is open to members and non-members and covers a range of topics relevant to local business operators.
