Emergency services were called to a property at Quambone near Coonamble to attend the crash that happened in the midst of an annual gyrocopter event. Police are yet to release the name of the 49-year-old Dubbo man who was the pilot and sole occupant of the craft.
About 1.50pm police and ambulance crews were called to the property on Emby Tooloon Road about 20kms west of Coonamble after receiving reports a plane had crashed into a paddock.
Initial reports were that the man had sustained head, chest, face, arm and leg injuries, NSW Ambulance service spokesman Craig Pusser said.
Paramedics treated the man at the scene and loaded him into the ambulance and he was taken to Coonamble Hospital.
“Paramedics called for additional assistance from the rescue helicopter but unfortunately the man died of his injuries,” Mr Pusser said.
Police believe the ultra-light gyrocopter crashed into the paddock and burst into flames.
They established a crime scene at the crash site and investigations into the incident are being conducted by the local police and the Australian Sport and Rotorcraft Association.
Castlereagh command acting Inspector Jeff Morgan had four officers back at the scene yesterday who would concentrate on gathering accounts of what happened before a report was prepared for the Coroner.
“We believe it was a large club which have a get together every Easter,” he said.
“There are a number of witnesses to speak to.”
