Doorknockers go out for play

04 Nov, 2005 09:01 AM
An innovative new program to entice the city's youth to "get active" has been taken to the streets by NSW Sport and Recreation department staff. As part of the Dubbo Youth Strategy, staff have been knocking on doors to spread the message of the upcoming launch of the "@ Play Crew" program. Developed by the Dubbo Youth Action team, "@ Play Crew" is aimed at encouraging participation of 10 to 17-year-olds and their families to join in a range of activities across the city. When the Daily Liberal caught up with the busy doorknockers, they had just delivered their 500th pamphlet, and were excited by the response from the community. "We're out and about telling people what the "@ Play Crew is all about and encouraging them to come along to our gala day this Sunday," NSW Sport and Recreation's Mark Horton said. "The gala and registration day has been organised as a direct result of community requests for more opportunities which are affordable to families and easy to access." Mr Horton said the project is an "activity incentive based initiative where kids accrue points to prizes through participating in sport and recreational activities. "But it's not just about sport - it's about engaging people in the community and in activities that are relevant to them. "We will be offering a smorgasbord of activities - from swimming to camping, football, and bushwalking, music and dance - to name a few," Mr Horton said. Support from local sporting and special interest clubs has been encouraging according to Mr Horton. "Although the project is in its very early stages, we hope more clubs and organisations will come on board because the response from the public has been very positive." Word of the gala day and the "@ Play Crew" project had already reached Caroline Watson by the time she received a knock on her door. "I've had two phone calls already from friends to tell me about the project and my boys and I are quite excited about it. "Not everyone can afford to play sport or can get to sport, so this is a great idea," she said. The gala and registration day will be on this Sunday at Apollo House from 9am to noon and at the Gordon Centre from 1pm to 4pm.
