A Dubbo man has told how he came to the aid of a security guard who was being assaulted by a group of men at the Dubbo racecourse on Tuesday.
Police are investigating the circumstances of the incident that resulted in the guard, who was working at Dubbo Turf Club’s Melbourne Cup Day meeting, being taken to hospital by ambulance with facial injuries.
The guard was attacked after the final race, just minutes before the club’s members area was due to close.
It is believed he was attacked by a group of men after refusing to allow them into the club’s members’ area.
The man, who didn’t wish to be named, said he intervened because of the unfair nature of the stoush.
“The members was on last drinks and was about to close,” he said.
“There was a group of blokes coming towards the door but I only really saw it out of the corner of my eye.
“When it happened, someone yelled out to help the guard and because it was three on one I went out and pinned one of the guys down.
“I’m too old to be fighting but seeing a group laying into one bloke ... you have to do something.”
Dubbo Turf Club secretary-manager Mark Day said the incident was a bad way to end what had been a good day.
“We had 1406 people through the gate, which was a good increase on last year,” he said.
“Everyone had a good day and we were about to close up.”
According to a report sheet filled out at the racecourse, a group of people were attempting to purchase alcohol before they left the premises.
“The outside bars had closed and these guys were trying to get alcohol to take away from the course,” Mr Day said.
“But we don’t allow alcohol into the course and we don’t allow it out of the course.
“Plus they weren’t members and weren’t allowed into the members’ area so the security guy didn’t let them in and that’s when it started.”
Orana Local Area Command crime manager Detective Inspector Rod Blackman released a statement yesterday afternoon confirming police were looking into the incident.
“Dubbo Police are currently investigating an allegation of assault occurring at the Melbourne Cup Race event,” Det Insp Blackman said.
“We are generally quite pleased with both days (Derby Day and Melbourne Cup) in terms of minimal police intervention required, both inside and outside the race events.
“ We thank patrons for their responsible behaviour and organisers for their commitment to provide safe and enjoyable events.”
