Bail refused after Narromine raid - Man pleads guilty on drug-related charges

14 Apr, 2008 09:55 AM
A man charged over Thursday’s alleged amphetamine drug bust in Narromine entered a guilty plea to all but one charge in Dubbo Local Court yesterday.

Michael Forrest, 36, pleaded guilty to three drug-related charges including possessing and manufacturing amphetamine.

Forrest was arrested Thursday morning during a drug raid in Narromine, which was one of two unrelated raids in the town.

In the other, a man was bailed after being charged with cultivate a prohibited plant and possessing a prohibited drug. He will appear in Narromine Local Court on May 16.

Forrest, wearing a grey striped top and tracksuit pants, represented himself and had declined legal representation, magistrate Howard Hamilton said.

He pleaded guilty to possess a prohibited drug, which was amphetamine, knowingly take part in

supply of amphetamine, and manufacturing a prohibited drug.

He also pleaded guilty to resisting police officers, but not guilty to assaulting an officer when they raided his Meryula Street home, telling the court he “didn’t remember that”.

The police prosecutor “strongly” opposed bail, telling the court police were still “calculating the amount of drugs” allegedly found at Forrest’s residence.

“There were nine small packages, believed to be amphetamine, and two larger bags,” he said.

“Obviously it was a planned operation, and items were found and seized.

“The accused was in the process of manufacturing a prohibited drug, and poses a risk to the community.”

The court heard Forrest was on suspended 18-month sentence due to a prohibited firearm offence dating back to 2006.

Forrest told the court that he had “relapsed” to due to a family death, and that he would reside with his parents if bailed.

“Mum’s brother died, I was good up until Christmas and then I had a relapse because of everything that went on,” Forrest said.

“There’s no chance of (me) supplying or doing anything wrong, I’ll do urine samples or whatever. I want to go to rehab too.”

Magistrate Hamilton was unmoved and refused bail.

“You have entered pleas of guilty of all but one charge,” Magistrate Hamilton said.

“Some pleas you may seek to revisit after you obtain legal advice.

“But you have declined the opportunity to speak with a solicitor and in an electronic interview made various admissions.

“You were already subject to a suspended 18-month sentence.”
