Watching foreign and arthouse films is taking precedence over cake-cutting for a Dubbo society that’s turning 21 years of age.
Despite the approach of a special birthday, Dubbo Film Society’s focus is catering to the interests of its many and varied membership that has dipped in numbers.
Re-elected president Debbie Haysom has invited more of the city’s residents to join the society, promising a good time but not a party.
In 2010 it’s planning to screen films on the last Sunday of February, May, August and November, and “all day” on a date to be decided in June.
The Sunday events start with the screening of a foreign film at Reading Cinemas in Dubbo, the president says, followed by an interval where members mingle and socialise.
Then it’s back into the theatre for an arthouse film that’s different to usual cinema fare.
This month’s films, chosen by the society, are Noodle and Elegy.
“Noodle is an Israeli film about a flight attendant left to look after a little Chinese child,” Ms Haysom said.
Elegy is a drama starring Ben Kingsley and Penelope Cruz that does not require subtitles.
About 200 people have signed up for the 2010 program but the society could accommodate 100 more.
Existing members are anywhere between the age of 30 and 80, and from all walks of life.
It costs $60 per person to be a member of the society for a year.
