An Aladdin’s cave constructed from thousands of colourful bottles is set to be Dubbo’s latest tourist attraction.
Jan Gilmour and Brian Lewis have created sheer magic in the garden of their property, 10 minutes from Dubbo on the Dunedoo Road.
They’ve now gained Dubbo City Council approval to share their pride and joy with the public for 28 days this year.
The first two-hour tours will be held on June 1, 8, 9, 22 and 29.
When Jan and Brian moved to their 14.7 hectare holding it was almost denuded of trees and covered with troublesome wire weed.
Fifteen years on there’s foliage galore, an impressive array of West Australian gumnuts and charming surprises at every turn - rustic chairs set up for The Three Bears to enjoy bowls of porridge, Enid Bylton’s Faraway Tree (complete with hanging pots and pans), tiny houses and tea things laid out for fairy folk.
Jan and Brian started off creating something special for their grandchildren, who can always tell when the fairies call because trails of glitter are left behind.
The 1.8-metre wide imaginative bottle house has been a family project. It includes bottles of every age and description along with jugs and ceramic ornaments.
Each grandchild has an individual bottle with special photographs and mementos. Older family members have distinctive bottles too, ranging from shorthand messages and shells to a jar of preserved centipedes.
The bottle house has a gravel floor and contains an old metal storage chest of ‘treasure’ stands in pride of place along with a range of display items including antique dolls, miniature bottles and an ornamental Egyptian brass urn and goblets set out on a tray. Additional bottles are suspended from marine rope, lined up on support beams and overflow from an old laundry copper.
The exterior of the bottle households more surprises including an emu, genie and Harry Potter looking down from a magical car created from a Morris Minor bumper bar, motorcycle tyres and the grille of an old Holden Statesman.
Australiana and heritage collectables are displayed at every turn throughout the garden.
Positioned near the house are terraced plantings, a fish pond, spa, stunning ferns, hanging wire basket displays and ever-present gumnuts.
The bottle house garden is located at 37R Dunedoo Road. Further information about tours can be obtained by telephoning 6887 2732.
