Fun, education on equal-access play equipment

26 Sep, 2009 04:00 AM
An equal-access playground funded by the Federal Government has been built in Dubbo’s Victoria Park and is proving popular with kids and families.

The equal-access playground has been designed for everyone including children with disabilities, parents who use wheelchairs, scooters or other mobility devices and who want to supervise their children there, seniors with mobility adaptations, as well as park users with baby strollers and carriages.

The playground includes a musical section, sandpit, climbing structures, equal-access swing, slippery dip, bicycle track and more.

At its December 2008 meeting, Dubbo City Council determined that $220,000 of the $1,058,000 funding from the Federal Government’s Regional and Local Community Infrastructure Program would be allocated to the creation of the playground.

Part of the Victoria Park redevelopment project, the playground is innovative and creative in design and features a diverse range of play equipment, a council spokesperson said.

“In addition to having fun, it will provide children with the opportunity to develop co-ordination, language and negotiation skills, hand-eye co-ordination and strength,” the spokesperson said

“Garden areas, shade and seating has also been included for parents to enjoy their time out while supervising the children.”
