Exactly one year on since Dubbo’s bright star, Charlie Bartley, flashed across the nation on So You Think You Can Dance, the light is still burning brightly for the young dancer.
Finishing second on the hit television show, Charlie swept the audience off its feet by shaking his own and won the voters over with a wide smile, a feverish work ethic and an up-beat personality.
“That’s kind of the lifestyle, you never want to be not busy,” he said.
“I like being flat-chat, it is fun what I am doing.”
Now out of sight from the cameras Charlie has continued the frantic pace with a dancing workshop tour of rural Australia and a string of auditions, which landed him his latest gig.
Starting next month Charlie will be begin rehearsing for the upcoming musical Fame.
The role will see him travel Australia, possibly the world, before the show hits Sydney in October.
Another opportunity saw him experience “the most interesting audition” he had ever participated in.
The three-day try-out for the famed Cirque du Soleil had Charlie battling it out among 400 other dancers before he made the final 20. Making the shortlist will see his name placed on its books for future productions.
For the moment however he was just happy to “have a job for a year” with Fame hinting at the reversal of fortune since appearing on Dance.
It wasn’t always stage lights, star treatment and a sought after autograph for the 20-year-old.
Before Dance Charlie danced all day at the Brent Street dance school in Sydney, and worked all night to pay his way.
“It is a tough profession, you really have to love your work,” he said. “People go for years and years auditioning without getting a single call back. One of the main things about the show was the exposure.”
Speaking from a train in the Sydney, Charlie described a career that was shuttling to a destination unknown.
It was a wild ride, Charlie said, but one that he was loving.
“I don’t know where it will take me,” he said. “It is a ride that takes me with the wind and that is something I love.”
