The expansion of a groundbreaking domestic violence program has come at the right time for vulnerable women and children in Dubbo.
Figures from Western Women’s Domestic Violence Court Advocacy paint a sad picture with 3010 reported incidents in the last 12 months - nearly 1000 more than the previous year.
Everyone has the right to feel safe in their own home.
That’s why the Staying Home Leaving Violence program is so important.
The State Government initiative removes violent offenders, allowing women and children to escape abuse while remaining safely in a familiar environment.
The program was trialled in Bega and East Sydney before being rolled out to Walgett, Moree, Newcastle, Campbelltown, Blacktown and Wyong last year at a cost of $1.36 million.
It is now being expanded to Dubbo, following analysis of police crime figures, homelessness and the extent of support services already in place.
Domestic violence hurts women and harms children. One of the reasons women return to violent partners is the difficulty in setting up a new life. Starting over is difficult, expensive and daunting.
Often the easier option is to return home - even where there is violence.
Women and children should not be driven to homelessness or uprooted from their families, friends, jobs and schools.
