THE summer season is almost over and with the weather in Dubbo slowly coming back to normal, many are taking advantage of the warm weather.
Some residents of Dubbo and the surrounding areas have taken to watersports and fishing as their recreational activities, but many are not taking the necessary safety precautions.
Whether you are fishing on a river, or water-skiing on the Burrendong Dam, wearing a life jacket and being able to swim, or with somebody who can, is essential.
The most recent victim on our waterways was a 76-year-old man from Wellington, who tragically drowned while fishing with his friends on the Macquarie River. The Daily Liberal send its deepest condolences to the man’s family and friends.
Most people would think their swimming skills are good enough without a life jacket, but it could take a split-second and the water currents could turn deadly.
Another suggestion would be to stay close to the shore, and if the weather deteriorates, people are in close proximity to dry land.
Safety should be the number one priority when a friend or family member decides to go out and spend a day on the water. This doesn’t just apply to rivers and dams, but to swimming pools as well.
It is, of course, extremely beneficial to teach children how to swim, but even more so if they do it safely. Parents should always keep a close eye on their children swimming, as it could take a split second and something could go wrong.
There have been far too many deaths and near-misses on our waters to risk others occurring.
