Discussion is the way to change

THE NSW Minister for Aboriginal Affairs, Victor Dominello, was at Dubbo today for a public meeting designed to give the community an opportunity to have their say in the development of a new Aboriginal affairs strategy for NSW.

This is a good news story, not only for Dubbo, but for the state as statistics still indicate a wide gap between indigenous members of our country and the mainstream.

The recent anniversary of the 40th year of the tent embassy in Canberra created a media frenzy with graphic images of Prime Minister Julia Gillard being half-dragged by her security service and Opposition Leader Tony Abbott running along in the security scrum, behind her.

It is proper a full investigation be carried out in regard to this shameful chapter in our politics and already one of the Prime Minister’s media liaisons (or spin doctors) has resigned for his role in the event.

But to paraphrase Mr Abbott, we have to move on.

Tomorrow’s meeting forms part of the NSW Government’s Ministerial Taskforce on Aboriginal Affairs consultation process.

The strategy has been designed to incorporate reform of service delivery, education and employment outcomes for Aboriginal people.

What must result from this, and similar meetings around the state, is the delivery of positive words and actions. For too long there have been action plans from both sides of politics and yet little seems to change.

If we are to close the gap, we must act with certainty.
